PRP for Thinning Hair

Patterned hair loss with thinning of hair is an exceedingly common concern in men and some women. The gold standard of treatment — minoxidil application, nioxin, laser treatments— all can prevent further hair thinning, but most are not very effective in re-growing lost hair without continued use. For those whose scalp is already showing through the thinned hair, there is a ray of hope in the form of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment which has recently been found to regrow hair.

Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment for Hair loss:

Dr Rajetha Damisetty,  member of the editorial board of International Journal of Trichology, says, “Bringing back lost hair is a huge challenge for those with patterned hair loss. The underlying problem is genetic in males and is less well understood in women. The answer finally came in the form of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment. Platelets are tiny cells in your blood that repair blood vessels and stop the bleeding. They are virtual powerhouses, rich in growth factors that stimulate the hair follicle stem cells to divide and thicken the thinning hair. PRP is a concentrated form of your own platelets, obtained from your blood. It is delivered right at the hair root, to the stem cells of the hair.”

She further adds that in combination with medical treatment in the form of lotions or foams and oral medications including dietary supplements, PRP treatment boosts regrowth and restores much more hair than was thought possible earlier. Depending on the stage of hair loss, 6-10 sessions are done at monthly intervals. The whole process takes about 30 to 40 minutes right from the blood collection to injection.  It has also been administered differently by different doctors, check with your local specialist.
“In trained hands, PRP treatment has virtually no side effects. It is associated with no risk of allergy or infections as platelets from your own blood are used with minimal processing. After months of  trials and training,  teams of doctors are now ready to restore to hair to its best possible form.”  The results will vary.
