Dolly Parton‘s wigs are as much a part of her costume as her stage clothes. In a sit-down with the Hallmark Channel, the country legend talks about why she decided to start wearing wigs, also sharing three of her famous wigs.

“I used to try to keep my own hair teased and as big as I liked it and having the bleach and all that, it just broke off,” the legend explains. “I thought, ‘Why not just wear wigs?’ That way I never have a bad hair day. I have a big hair day, but not a bad hair day.”

As the saying goes, the higher the hair, the closer to God. For some singers, like Parton, big hair is part of the persona.

“Gospel singers and country singers just have to have that big hair, it’s just a thing,” she says.

Parton also brought famous most famous wigs along to show viewers. One wig was featured on an old Porter Wagoner duet on 1973 album We Found It, while another was showcased on her 1987 album cover from Rainbow.

“That hair was bigger than me!” she exclaims. “I look at myself sometimes in all of those pictures and think, ‘Oh my Lord what was I thinkin’?’”

A third wig, which gave Parton “gentle waves,” was her hairstyle on her 2011 album Better Days, and she admits it’s a wig she still uses frequently today.

So, what does Parton’s real hair look like? As she explains to the hosts, not too much different than her wigs.

“I keep my hair the same color. I keep my roots up for my husband. I don’t want to look good for everybody else and then go home and look terrible,” she admits. “I try to keep my own hair the same length, just a little below the shoulder.”

Everything goes around, back in the 60’2 & 70’s many women wore wigs for convenience, Dolly has embraced this and if we all did life would be simplier. Stop in a take a look, we have your do waiting for you!
