August- National Hair Loss Awareness Month: Some Facts behind this Surprisingly Common Condition

The American Academy of Dermatology has designated August as National Hair Loss Awareness Month.

According to the American Hair Loss Association, an estimated 80 million men and women in the United States suffer from hair loss. Surprisingly, women represent 40 percent of American hair loss sufferers, and children with hair loss account for roughly 3% of all pediatric office visits in this country.

There is an assumption that hair loss is strictly a male condition but actually the truth is, hair loss affects nearly as many women as men, and there are a number of causes, from hormones, to genetics, to prescription medicines, trauma, diseases, and hair care. The good news is that hair loss is a treatable, even reversible, condition.

Androgenetic Alopecia, or common male pattern baldness (MPB), accounts for more than 95% of hair loss in men. By the age of thirty-five two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of appreciable hair loss, and by the age of 50 approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair. Hair loss in men can also typically occur from medical conditions, diet, stress, hormones, and genes.

It is estimated that hair loss affects 1 in 4 women and by the age of 50-60, some are showing signs at a younger age. Hair loss for women can be the result of many factors including excessive or improper use of styling products, hair styles that pull on the hair, like braids and ponytails, childbirth, major surgery, stress, diseases, diet, hormones, prescription drugs, contraceptives, and cancer treatments.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female,” said Dr. Berkowitz. “Hair loss is not just a physical issue. Our hair is an important part of who we are, and the emotional toll of losing your hair, especially suddenly, can be devastating.”
